I enjoy writing in coffeehouses but I am not a huge fan of pretentious mega chains, such as Starbucks or Coffee Bean.
The photo to the left is a throwback of me on a personal writing retreat to Zephyr in Pasadena, California.
I frequent this establishment. It's an art-filled cafe & hookah lounge inside an old, quaint house, which serves yummy crêpes, paninis & coffee drinks plus they have free WiFi and they stay open late.
Coffee is my ally when my schedule is brutal or I am trying to meet a vastly approaching deadline; it's often times my best motivation to start writing.
Also, I think I am more lax in the coffeehouse as opposed to the library because of the unspoken added pressure to perform due to time constraints, limited space availability or prohibitions on food, drink and noise. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The coffeehouse certainly helps to break the monotony for me so that I can unplug, catch up on my writing and be inspired (e.g., people watch).
Below you'll find 6 more cool coffeehouses in California that you may want to visit on your next personal writing retreat.
